No Other Gods

An old adage goes, “God created man in His own image, and man has been returning the favor ever since”.

Credit for the following story goes to Ray Comfort with Living Waters Ministry:

“A preacher was once given free tickets to the rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar. The cast had extended the invitation, insisting that he attend, so for their sake he went. After the show he was invited to meet the cast. He told the talented singers that he enjoyed their performance, but that the Jesus they portrayed was not the Jesus of the Bible. The woman who played Mary Magdalene replied, ‘But we are making Jesus acceptable to the twentieth century’.”

“Her statement was true. Man has always tried to make God acceptable to himself. He prefers to try to change God rather than change his own sinful ways. It is called ‘idolatry’ - making a god in your own image.”

“I am the Lord your God, which has brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:2,3)
Man has always made false gods. Some gods are made of wood and stone while others are just made up in a man's mind. Any time you make a god to suit yourself you will be sure that he likes the things you like and hates the same things you hate. Whenever you make a god to suit yourself it is called idolatry, and people that is sin! When we are worshipping the One, True God of the Bible it is we who must change in order to conform to His image...not God conforming to ours. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Larry,

You wrote:

N.T "Tom" Wright has this to say in his book For all God's Worth. I think it goes well with your post.

"The God I Want? Left to myself, the god I want is a god who will give me what I want. He - or more likely it - will be a projection of my desires."

and also:

"At the more sophisticated level, the god I want will be a god who lives up to my intellectual expectations: a god of whom I can approve rationally, judiciously, after due consideration and weighing up of theological probabilities. I want this god because he, or it, will underwrite my intellectual arrogance. He will boost my sense of being a refined modern thinker. The net result is that I become god; and this god I've made becomes my puppet."

My prayer is that I never find myself in this doing this.

Great post brother. Keep them coming.

Wes,

Thanks so much for your comments to my post. I agree with your and Tom Wright's assesment and pray that I will always look to the Word of God in discovering and knowing Who He is, and not the projection of my own desires or abilities, intellectual or otherwise.

Thanks again for your input, Wes. By the way, do you mind if I put a link to your blog on my page?
